The International African American Museum is a museum of African-American history in Charleston, South Carolina, on the site where Gadsden's Wharf, the disembarkation point of up to 40% of all American enslaved persons, once stood. Construction of the IAAM began in January 2020 after 20 years of planning. The museum opened it doors on June 27th 2023.
IAAM cost more than $100 million and has been some 20 years in the making. Now that it’s here, its staff and team are ready for the whole world to grace its doors.
“We welcome everyone to visit us at IAAM,” says president and CEO Tonya Matthews, “to simultaneously hold the sensations of trauma and joy that are woven together throughout our exhibitions, and feel something that is akin to everything.”
Once inside, visitors can explore nine galleries, including the Transatlantic Experience, The Theater, Atlantic Worlds Gullah Geechee, African Roots, and Carolina Gold. There’s also The South Carolina Connections, American Journeys and the Special Exhibitions.
Beyond the galleries are other spaces, such as the African Ancestors Memorial Garden, to reflect on the historic significance of Gadsden’s Wharf. The garden is a free and open space for the public to host informal and structured gatherings.
The IAAM is a must-see because it provides an unparalleled visual, auditory, and sensory experience that harnesses the power of place.
